Symphonies

After his studies in France(81-84), Vasco Martins has remained in Cape Verde ever since, living a secluded life his island, far from any centre of musical productions. In the darkness that surround us, Vasco Martins believes that the music can act as light, enabling the creator to illuminate others. In his symphonies particularly, he tries to convey ‘fulfillment, tranquility and hope. His nine symphonies are metaphysical and formal studies: their tonal and modal language is inseparably linked to beats which remind us Cape Verde is a bridge between Africa Brazil and Western culture, a port in a vast ocean, a still natural place that can only escaped by means of imagination or simply dreaming, as the 9 symphonies. Today, Vasco Martins’ symphonies form a respectable corpus and display a fine stylistic variety. It is a reflection on musical time, the expression of poetical world inspired as much by nature as by the phenomena that govern the universe, and by spiritual, musical and philosophical thoughts, specially from the Far East.’ HCF
